Auckland, New Zealand – Organic Initiative (Oi), a New Zealand social enterprise focused on the removal of plastic and chemicals from hygiene products worldwide, is thrilled to be the recipient of three national innovation awards at the New Zealand Innovation Awards held in Auckland last night
The company won two major categories – Excellence in Social Innovation and Innovation in Sustainability & Renewable Energy, and 2016 Supreme Westpac Women of Influence award winner, Co-founder and Executive Director of Oi, Helen Robinson, was awarded the Most Inspiring Individual on the night.
The national innovation awards evaluators said, “Solving the problem of plastic in sanitary products by providing a healthy alternative while celebrating women and their health and wellbeing. This is a multifaceted, compelling approach delivered with passion, humour and purpose. Very hard to fault this.”
The judges went on to say that, “Helen’s career is as diverse as it is impressive, but what stood out to me was her commitment to applying her skills and experience to Oi, to create mass good for many. She is an inspiring and innovative leader, using business as a means of social transformation.”
Oi was first launched into the New Zealand market in October 2015 and in just two years has seen a dramatic increase in demand from Kiwi women who are committed to looking after their health and the environment. More and more women are actively seeking certified organic, fair trade and biodegradable sanitary products over conventional products.
Oi’s CEO and Executive Director, Helen Robinson says "these innovative awards are tribute to our wonderful customers who have chosen to join the Oi revolution. Our customers understand the enormous impact the way we live has on our future survival and sustainability.”
Interim Chief Executive Officer of the NZ Innovation Council, Craig Cotton, says “last night was a first for me seeing so many innovations being celebrated but more importantly so many incredible Kiwi innovators not only delivering new commercial outcomes but literally changing people’s lives! The team at Oi are one group of innovators and leaders who optimize this! Personally and on behalf of the NZ Innovation Council I am super excited for what the future holds for the Oi team – it truly is a revolution in a box!”
